Dutch Spring Camp |
Hospitality Queens Day Tour
Netherlands 28/04 - 01/05
-> STAGE 2
The 30th of April is a national holiday in the Netherlands, called Queensday.
This year, the party will be bigger as normal because the queen has her 25th year anniversary.
She will visit Amsterdam and Scheveningen (The Hague) and the party will be really good there. It´s a great
time to organise a Dutch Spring Camp!!!
The Plan!
The camp will take place in a community for artists, a former
industrial building in the port of Scheveningen, called De Vloek van
Scheveningen. The beach is nearby, the city centre of Scheveningen is
1 km and city centre of Den Haag is 4km the away. In the main hall of
the building is plenty of space for up to 200 people at daytime for
workshops and to hang around. In the night there will be about 25
staple beds (for 50 people) where you can put your camping mattress
and sleeping bag. You need a warm sleeping bag and warm clothes for
during the evening, when you like to sit in the lounge corner, because
the hall is not insulated and can be pretty cold if the weather is
bad. There is also a vegetarian bar / restaurant in the building and
they will prepare cheap and tasty meals especially for us.

Scheveningen
Scheveningen is the largest bathing resort of Holland and draws about 10 millions of visitors every year. It was for the first time mentioned in 1280 as the fishermen village Sceveninghe ("people of Sceve"), about 4 km of the centre of The Hague. The local fish industry used ships that were taken on the beach by horses (bomschuiten), until a sea port was built on the south end of the boulevard (beginning 20th century). Meanwhile Scheveningen developed into one of Europe's most prestigeous resorts, with health treatment hotels like the impressive Kurhaus (1885).
Because both places have considerably grown since then, Scheveningen is now part of the city of The Hague and has a wide boulevard along the beach with lots of bars and dancings.
Things to do in Scheveningen
The end of April is a great time to be in Holland, because lots of flowers and trees are in bloom and there's pretty much sunshine. With its many beach pavilions and cafés on the promenade, it's great to enjoy Scheveningen’s relaxed atmosphere, by walking along the beach or in the nature of the dunes. By the end of April Holland will celebrate the Queen‘s Birthday. Queen Beatrix celebrates her government jubilee in Scheveningen during the time of our camp. In the old village (near the harbour) there will be a traditional folklore festival and you can watch the queen making a tram ride (30th of April, 14:00 to 15:30 h). On the beach, there will be a built a super sand sculpture for the queen, as part of the International Sand Sulpture Festival. You can enjoy some spectacular fireworks which are ignited from the Pier (30th of April, 21.30 h). A free flee market and kids activities can be found all day along Fredrik Hendriklaan, close to the harbour.
Things to do in The Hague (City Centre)
The centre of The Hague is going to be full of activities on Queen’s Night (29th of April) and Queens Day (30th of April). It's about 4 km to the centre of The Hague (15 minutes by tram, 45 minutes walk). Between 10.30 am and 11.30 am the queen will attend a gathering with music on the Binnenhof, the old inner court. An exhibition is organized in the Atrium (new Townhall). A flower market is held along Lange Voorhout, (30th of April, 9.30 until 17:30 h). For several days the traditional Queen’s Fair is situated on Lange Vijverberg, the Buitenhof and Frederik Hendrikplein, which offers also spectacular sideshows.
Queens Night
in the run-up to Koninginnedag, on Friday the 29th of April 2005 there is a music festival in the city, attracting more than 200,000 visitors. The event is free of charge, with stages on four different squares in the heart of the city where live bands will be performing. Away from the noice, in the Theater at Spui, the BinneNach (‘inside night’) will take place with singers in an acoustic setting. In the Grote Marktstraat, there are Sound Stations with jazz and funk with jamming musicians. Check out http://www.koninginnenach.nl for the full programme.

latest NEWS ...
02.05.2005 | .. over.
(Tijs) It was a great weekend with lots of sun, smiles and fun! The great location in the port of Scheveningen, the terrific vegetarian cooks and the cool workshops were the basic. But more important was the relaxing atmosphere and the nice mix of people from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, United States, France, Belgium ...
We were a bit worried about the amount of sleeping places that we could offer but it all went fine and nobody complained about the discomfort. Sleeping in the bus was a cool idea, it became the most cosy and popular sleeping place. In my house, I counted that there would be place for 8 people, but in the morning I found out that 8 people slept in just one room and 6 more in the other rooms!
Maybe we were a bit over-organized, with all the workshops, excursions and sportive activities that we planned. Most HC-ers preferred to breath the atmosphere of the fishing village with its traditional queensday kids activities instead of joining the partying crowd in Amsterdam. And just hanging around on the beach is something that can not easilly be beaten by other activities.
Let me thank you all for making the weekend a great success, especially the dutch members who convinced me to organize it and helped with the preparations: Bas (basszje) for all the preparations and driving, Alex (adia.info) for the website and messages, Stef (stefned) and Geert (pepito) for the handenspandiensten, Joost (joostdevries) for the mattrasses and excursion, Lusi and Yzza (miles23) for building up the beds, Anneke (copcai) for the Delft sightseeing, Ramune (lakune) and Aldo (aldootje) for the ideas, Mark (markbrynn) for hosting, Frederique (free2think) and Kevin (thebrain) for accomodation in Amsterdam, Aldert (aldert), Jenny (dutchamericanjenny) and Hoda (hoda) for activating the Utrecht-members, Esly (essely) and Jurgen (jurgen) for taking people to Groningen (and the disches!), Maren (marisa) and Sander (sanspek) for the cool workshop ideas, Aurelie (kenza888), Ronald (Sprinter), Marco (mrco) and the others for the stimulation and fun! (sorry if I forget someone).
Let's not wait too long to see each other again!

27.04.2005 | Less than 24 hours...
(Tijs) Less than 24 hours to go for the Spring camp, we're already busy with the final preparations. And we're happy that the rain has gone. The waeather foracast is sunny and rising temperatures (saturaday 23 degrees, sunday 27 degrees Celsius!)
Here is some last-minute info:
You can still register for the camp, because the register form was not working well for some time.
We realize that the fee of 10€ is a lot of many people, so we tried to make the costs as low as possible. That's why we decided to include one dinner and the
drinks in the price.
The good news is that me managed to have an extra sleeping accomodation for in case too many people subscribe. The bad news is that the location is not for
free, so we will only use it if nessesary. The extra sleeping places are in Zoetermeer, close to The Hague. There are extra night trains every half hour on queensnight to Zoetermeer (15 minutes from The Hague Central).
Public transport in The Hague is for free on Queensday. If you buy a train ticket to Amsterdam on queensday, you have public transport in Amsterdam for free as well.
Hope to see you all in The Hague tomorrow or somewhere in the weekend! Let's jump in the sea together!!
